Hello, and welcome to our fantastic church! I’m the organist and choir director. I have been blessed to serve this congregation for over 34 years.
My musical studies included some outstanding and notable teachers: Leland Ralph, who was the organist of Westminster Presbyterian in Sacramento; Dr. John Walker, the organ chair at SJSU, later the chair of the organ department at the Manhattan School of Music, and the organist at Riverside Church in NYC; and David Maulsby, the organist at the Episcopal Church in Berkeley. Through David Maulsby, I became part of a line of organists with a teacher to pupil connection to J.S. Bach. I received my Bachelors of Music from San Jose State University, with emphasis in organ performance.
Soon after I graduated, I began teaching music at Sierra Hills School in Meadow Vista and continued for 32 years, instructing children from kindergarten through 5th grade, and teaching instrumental music to the beginning band. I feel fortunate that my teaching career included all the enthusiasm that children bring.
I have a lovely wife, Janet, who seems to correct me more than needed. I have two sons, Ben, who is a barber in San Francisco, and Tim, who lives in Sacramento, where he and his wife, Erin, attend McGeorge law school together. My hobbies include singing with the Placer Pops Chorale, golf, gardening, hiking, attending musicals/concerts, and reading.
I love to have people experience that incredible rush of emotion that comes from participation in music. I was raised in a Lutheran Church, and I continue to be amazed at the power of Christ’s love. Please don’t hesitate to talk with me about your desire to sing in choir, or be a part of our musical experience.
